Technology is an enabler; it can help a business improve efficiencies and even expand operations. However, the use of technology should be balanced with business needs and practicality.  Technology is incorporated into virtually every facet of business operations today - from personal computers all the way to advanced broadband Internet access.  As the world of health care is propelled to utilize technology in the delivery of care to patients, it is vital to the system that these technologies are properly managed to insure interoperability, availability, reliability, and performance.

The Community Health Network of West Virginia has assembled a team of talented individuals and partnered with world class technology companies to deliver a menu of key services to our members.  The list of services below demonstrates the value that CHNWV brings to each and every member from a technology perspective:

CHNWV's Data Center Solution: To mitigate risks, CHNWV has partnered with one of the leading telecommunications providers to co-locate its servers within their data center in the Charleston, WV area. CHNWV migrated to the nTelos co-location facility and utilized their dedicated hosting services. This provides a solid foundation for CHNWV and its members’ growth in the utilization of technology. Every precaution to ensure the physical well being of the servers that host the CHNWV applications and data is taken. nTelos allows CHNWV to use its mission critical infrastructure, multiple data connections, redundant power and backup generation, as well as advanced environmental controls and fire supression technologies which are not available to independent or stand-alone data center operations.

Network Monitoring and Connectivity: CHNWV uses advanced network monitoring tools that continually check for problems with our servers or data connections. In most cases, any problems are alerted and corrected by us before anyone using the systems are aware of the problem. CHNWV also uses Internet standard technologies to provide for secure and robust communications between its main data center and its member organizations. At the core of these technologies, Virtual Private Network (VPN) is applied to ensure the secure communications at the network layer. Connectivity to CHNWV’s datacenter system can be established by its members using a national MPLS network where available or by utilizing the Internet subject to throughput requirements being met. Within the datacenter, CHNWV maintains a committed rate of data bandwidth with automatic bursting to higher levels to meet network traffic demands.

Backups and Server Redundancy: CHNWV’s strategy to address data loss and service availability issues have been implemented through a system of processes that provide for nightly backups of data and redundant systems for critical elements. CHNWV provides multiple levels of data backup through the retention of up to midnight data both on local storage and tape. Server redundancy has been implemented using advanced Red Hat Linux cluster services and Citrix Presentation Server farms to provide redundancy and failover capacity in the event of hardware failures with systems having critical elements such as cooling, power, disk drives, etc.

Enhanced Service Desk: CHNWV operates an enhanced service desk providing application users with a single, ultra-responsive point of contact for all queries and problems. With our extended hours call management services, your requests for assistance are promptly registered and deployed to the appropriate support personnel. Application of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices as defined by the IT Service Management (ITSM) reference model helps ensure consistently high-quality support for our members. CHNWV utilizes advanced problem management software with automatic escalations which insures that member requests are handled in accordance with its priority. Members are also provided with online, detailed service metrics that allow them to review the status of requests and the level of their activity with our service desk - giving them full transparency to CHNWV's operations.

Internet Content Filtering and Monitoring: CHNWV provides a managed internet content filtering and monitoring service to keep members safe and productive. Every day new threats such as viruses, worms, Trojans, phishing attacks and spyware programs cause serious financial damage to companies through compromised computing systems, lost productivity and the theft of passwords and other confidential information. The opportunity to connect to Web sites that contain objectionable or even illegal content can leave organizations vulnerable to legal liabilities and unwanted security risks. Additionally, the use of instant messaging (IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P) applications compete for employees' time and can result in tremendous losses in productivity. The CHNWV content filtering service can be configured to use detailed policy controls to limit productivity-draining applications, such as instant messaging and Internet gaming. The controls can also prevent employees from accessing Web sites and downloading content that consumes a lot of bandwidth or that exposes your company to legal liabilities.

Hosted Microsoft Exchange E-mail and Blackberry Service: Email is perhaps the most important information technology resource utilized by business today. In today’s environment, rich with viruses, worms and malicious attacks, maintaining reliable messaging services is a daunting challenge for any organization. CHNWV's Microsoft Exchange Server® hosting provides enterprise-class reliability, performance and value for a simple, low monthly cost. Microsoft Exchange® is the world's most popular business messaging platform, with almost 60% of the market. Exchange is Microsoft's "messaging and collaboration server". It lets you do much more than simply forward or download your emails, and has been designed for businesses that use email to work together. It boosts productivity through advanced features like always-synced email, files, calendars and contacts; shared calendars that let people see colleagues’ availability to schedule or rearrange meetings, book conference rooms and plan projects; shared task lists that allow 'to do' lists to be created and assigned, then shared with team members; and shared contacts which guarantee that customers' contact details will never be lost or misplaced. Our Microsoft Exchange e-mail infrastructure provides CHNWV, along with its members, with a more secure, flexible, and reliable messaging infrastructure.

With CHNWV's email hosting service we are also be able to provide a higher and more flexible level of spam and virus detection by routing all mail through our Sonicwall E-mail Security appliance. All mail coming from outside, internet e-mail addresses (such at hotmail, yahoo or aol, etc.) are funneled through and filtered by this network appliance. Also, all outbound e-mail originating from users of our Microsoft Exchange server are also passed through this appliance and filtered for Spam and/or Viruses. The appliance also allows each end-user to manage their own Spam lists and thresholds. The SonicWALL Email Security appliance offers the highest possible level of network protection from all inbound and outbound e-mail threats by leveraging a global end-to-end attack monitoring network. The Sonicwall appliance also has the ability to enforce HIPAA regulatory compliance requirements. It has the ability to intelligently identify e-mail that violates compliance policies, monitors and reports the problem and uses policy-based routing to send mail to archiving and encryption technologies. This means that we can enable the device to filter and prevent the sending of e-mail outside of our network whose contents have the appearance of protected health information (PHI) such as Social Security Numbers.

Also, when you're away from the office, you can feel out of touch with your business. Well, not anymore. CHNWV provides a BlackBerry Enterprise Service which is fully integrated with your existing CHNWV Exchange email-hosting service at an additional fee. With CHNWV's BES Service, virtually your entire CHNWV hosted mail account is available in real time on your handheld BlackBerry or iPhone device. Handheld synchronization with your desktop email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes is now available at your fingertips no matter where you are, instantly!

Anti-Virus and Spyware Prevention: CHNWV offers a managed Anti-virus service that protects a member's network from viruses that can quickly spread, damage key documents, and even take down key systems. Every organization is constantly at risk from an estimated 1,000 new viruses every month. CHNWV's managed Anti-virus service ensures that members have a secure and up-to-date defence against all the latest threats. CHNWV's managed and hosted anti-virus service uses Computer Associates (CA) eTrust - one of the market leaders in anti-virus technology.

Other Technology Services: CHNWV provides other technical services to its membership on a straight time and materials, cost-of-services basis.  These include:

  • Wiring/Cabling: Remote Support, Remote Control, Asset Discovery and Management, Patch Management, and Virus/Spyware Removal.
  • Telephony: includes Deployment Planning, Rollouts, Installation and Configuration.
  • SMB Consulting: includes Purchase Assistance, New Product Evaluation, and Office Automation Solutions.
